How Does the sale of Girl Scout Cookies® benefit Girl Scouts?

TROOPS PROCEEDS

Angeles Council’s troop Girl Scout Cookie proceeds per box they sell ($.75) is one of the highest among all Girl Scout councils. Cadettes and Senior Girl Scouts may opt-out of program incentives and receive an additional $0.05 per box for their troop programs, travel, service projects and other girl-planned activities.

In 2007, our Girl Scout Cookie Sale Program generated a total of $737,154 for participating Girl Scout troops in our council. Every troop sets its goals for the year (or longer term projects) and funds their budgets from their annual Girl Scout Cookie® Sale Program revenue and other income earning projects. These include community service projects, troop travel and camping, group events and supplies. These needs are determined by the girls themselves, with the help of their adult volunteer leaders.

COUNCIL-WIDE PROCEEDS

Angeles Council Girl Scouts rely completely on the generosity of the local community for support of our Council. The Girl Scout Cookie® Sale Program generates a significant part of – but certainly not the total – of earned income for our annual budget. The council is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.

Funds are used council-wide for our Girl Scout …

·    Membership outreach that enable every girl who wants to be a Girl Scout in 101 communities of L.A. County to get involved, regardless of her family’s economic situation and keeps our network of 28 Girl Scout Neighborhoods working smoothly to serve over 9000 girls and support over 6000 adult volunteers.

·    Programs, including outdoor education, financial literacy, wellness/health, outdoor education and sports, STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), social and cultural diversity, awards and recognition, etc. They are offered at affordable costs to most families. For others we can provide subsidies. On behalf of our members ,the Council manages relationships with bus companies, horse stables, camp grounds and other community resources to insure that they comply with Girl Scout standards. Council also makes available for rent to troops and Girl Scout groups camping and other program equipment, educational materials, such as “In-A-Box” activities, and runs a Girl Scout retail shop.

·    Adult volunteer recruitment, screening, training, mentoring, support and recognition goes on all year. Over 99 percent of all adults involved in Girl Scouting are volunteers.

·    Council owned and operated facilities, including our Camp Osito Rancho in Big Bear and Council Headquarters in Santa Monica.

·   Council administration, including interface with GSUSA, stewardship of Girl Scouts’ finances, public relations / communications and fund raising, resource development and standards compliance reporting. The council is chartered by GSUSA to provide Girl Scout programs in our jurisdiction of 101 communities in L.A. County.

What’s the difference between the Girl Scout Cookie® Sale Program and other fund raising?

Girl Scouts, individually and collectively in their troops and groups, are not permitted to do fund raising, rather they may earn money for their specifically budgeted activities. No funds from the Girl Scout Cookie® Sale Program are given to any individual.

Launched in 1917 by Girl Scouts in Muskogee, Oklahoma, The Girl Scout Cookie® Sale Program is recognized nationally as a leading, formal educational business and economic literacy activity run by and for girls ages 6 to 18. By giving girls the opportunity to discover their own skills, connect through teamwork, and take action, the Girl Scout Cookie® Program has helped make Girl Scouting the premier leadership development experience for girls.

All activities (including the manufacturing of the cookies themselves!) are undertaken in accord with strict Girl Scouts of the USA safety guidelines and practices. Girl Scouts troop members manage inventory and finances, set goals, develop leadership and teamwork capacities, and learn first-hand marketing, public relations and other useful life skills … in fun ways. It’s no wonder ... many successful business women today say they got their start selling Girl Scout Cookies ®. Daisy Girl Scouts, five and six years old, are not allowed to participate in the program under any circumstances.

While a tempting concept, there’s no race to see who sells the greatest number of boxes. Achievement incentives are given to all girls reaching program benchmarks, demonstrating their successful plan and earnest effort.

Why can't Girl Scout Cookies®

 be sold on the Internet?

Our existing National Girl Scout policy prohibits the sale of Girl Scout Cookies® or any other Girl Scout approved product on the Internet. The safety of our girls is always our chief concern. Even in supervised settings it is not possible to guarantee that the person purchasing Girl Scout Cookies® harbors no harmful intent. Girl Scout Cookie® Activities are designed to be face-to-face learning experiences for girls. In an online setting, there is no guarantee that the seller is indeed a girl member of Girl Scouts. We have many ways for girls to explore and experience the benefits of science and technology and the Internet, including our Girls Go Tech initiative.
